Infant Massage For Special Needs Children

Infant massage can be beneficial for all infants but those with special needs may find it of  more benefit than most. Below I have outlined how Infant Massage can help with three common conditions, but these are not exhaustive. If you have any questions regarding a different condition, would like more information or want to book an infant massage session please contact me.

In all cases massage can help to strengthen the bond between you and your infant promoting communication between the two of you helping you to feel more confident in responding to your child’s needs. It also reduces stress for parent and baby by aiding relaxation which can in turn promote better sleep and a calmer nature.

Infant Massage and Visual Impairment
Infants with visual impairments often respond very well to infant massage. The use of regular massage can be of great benefit, providing in the infant with a chance to interact with their external world through touch. It can make it easier for parents to learn to guide their child towards objects, as well as helping the infant to overcome any resistance to being touched and can encourage them to be more sociable.

Infant Massage and Hearing Impairment
Hearing impairments can delay an infant’s development and regular infant massage can help to overcome this. As a parent it can help with finding ways to communicate with their child through facial expressions whilst also developing lip reading. It can help parents to learn more about their infants responses – in turn helping them to respond to their cues. This can all strengthen the bond between parent and child and also build self esteem.

Infant Massage and Cerebral Palsy
On a day to day basis Massage can bring a moderate to high level of relief and improvement for an infant with cerebal palsy. It can help to improve muscle tone and posture and can also help to relieve cramps that can result from stiff muscles. It can also help with constipation, chronic wind and improve circulation.
In cases of Cerebral Palsy massage techniques can be adjusted to suit the infant mobility.

Massage can be introduced at any age, but if your baby has been diagnosed with the condition the sooner you begin the better.
