Reflexology for Mental Health

Good mental health has been described as “a balanced, healthy attitude towards life” .  There are many reasons that a persons mental health may suffer, including repressed traumas, chronic stress, physical illness, childhood and hereditary issues.  These problems can lead to mental illness  in the forms of : Depression, Anxiety disorder, Bipolar disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSS) and Eating Disorders such as Anorexia or Bulimia

Mental illnesses are very rarely just confined to the mind, their symptoms can manifest in the body’s nervous system, mood, immunity, thought processes and perception.  In modern medicine  anti-depressants are often used to help to these symptoms but Reflexology can be used along side these modern medicine methods.

Reflexology may be able to help with mental health problems by stimulating the nervous and lymphatic systems, encouraging the release of the feel-good hormones Endorphins which are renown for relieving stress. Reflexology has a profound relaxing effect and by giving the individual time to rest, relax and switch off this can often have a massive effect on a personal mental health.

Other ways that Reflexology may help with good mental health are:

  • Reducing stress levels
  • Stimulating nerve function, reducing chronic pain levels that often impact mental health.
  • Enhancing self-esteem & confidence
  • Enhancing feelings of control and the ability to cope
  • Improving communication skills
  • Increasing energy levels
